BUILDING BETTER, SAFER ROADS
By working with local residents to identify and secure funding to fix dangerous accident ‘black spots’, we can make our roads safer. I will fi ght for a road system that will dramatically
improve the flood immunity of the Bruce Highway between Cairns and Townsville and I will keep the pressure on Peter Beattie to deliver road projects – on time!
MAKING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER
Local residents have a right to feel safe and secure in their communities. We shouldn’t have to put up with hooning on our local streets, graffi ti and other anti-social behaviour. I am committed to working together with Neighbourhood Watch and other groups to secure more funding from the Howard Government’s Crime Prevention Programme.
PROTECTING OUR UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT
We live in a great part of Queensland and protecting our local environment is essential to our quality of life. This means making sure we do everything we can to preserve our unique World Heritage values for future generations. I believe the best custodians of our natural assets are local residents. That’s why I will continue to work to secure more funding for practical, local environmental projects through the Natural Heritage Trust.
MORE TRAINING AND LEARNING IN THE REGION
As someone who had to move away to pursue my education, I understand the need for more opportunities for professional skills and career pathways for people in the region. That’s why I am
fighting for a school of tropical dentistry here in Cairns. I will work hard so that locals are provided with more choice of quality degrees – which will help attract more students to study in Cairns. I will also work to expand the availability of apprenticeships and other training opportunities for school leavers and mature-aged workers.
